What can you do with AI within asset management? More than you think!
You work daily with huge amounts of data about your assets and maintenance. But how do you use all that information? AI is playing an increasingly important role in this. A good example is the use of AI in work preparation, directly from IBM MAS. There are many other possibilities for AI in asset management. This blog provides a starting point – and we are curious: what would you like AI to do for you?
Example: faster access to the right information with your work order
Suppose you are a work preparer and want to indicate in a work order in IBM MAS which lubricant should be used for a particular bearing. That information can be found somewhere in technical documents such as manuals, product sheets, or maintenance instructions. But where exactly? With an AI assistant, you no longer have to find that out yourself. You ask your question in a separate tab within the work order, and the AI automatically searches all linked documents. The tool understands the context from the work order and immediately comes back with a concrete answer. Also useful for informing your mechanics: you can immediately save your questions and answers from the AI assistant as a reference in the worklog of IBM MAS.
AI as an assistant for work preparation and execution
This example shows how AI helps you work faster, smarter, and with fewer errors. You no longer have to search in folders, PDFs, or different systems. Everything stays within IBM MAS. The AI knows which asset is involved, which documents belong to it, and what is relevant at that moment, from technical documentation to certificates, safety regulations, work permits, and more. You save search time and can focus better on work preparation. And you always work with current and relevant information, which is also within easy reach. Your executing mechanics also quickly have access to information that helps them do their work easier and better. Both in preparation and during execution, AI delivers time savings – and you notice that directly in daily practice.
What else can AI do within asset management?
The possibilities are broader than you might think. Take, for example, the automatic assignment of work orders. Based on the description in the work order, AI can determine which team or solution group is the best fit – without you having to route it manually. Another application is suggestions for failure codes, where AI suggests a failure code (failure class) based on the work order text. This helps you with the registration and analysis of failures. Another idea is to use AI for cleaning up and standardizing data. An AI assistant recognizes different descriptions of the same fact, such as ‘does not work’, ‘broken’ or ‘does not work’, and suggests unambiguous terms. That makes your reports and analyses much more reliable. IBM is also working on using it in combination with IBM MAS. For example, various AI applications are built into IBM MAS 9.1.
